Clinical Trials Update: July 31, 2008 (HealthDay)

HealthDay - (HealthDay News) -- Here are the latest clinical trials, courtesyof CenterWatch:

For centuries, people have crossed the widest oceans and the deepest valleys in search for the metaphorical "fountain of youth," in order to escape the ever approaching aging process, and today we have found it on our back porch. Human Growth Hormones (HGH) the hormones responsible for the growth and development of children and adults are decreased in quantity around the age of thirty, and thus promote aging. By scientists capturing this hormone and then placing it back into the skin, it now has been heralded as the solution to anti-aging. Tests have proven that it increases muscle mass, promotes healthier skin, and gives back overall energy. Traditionally administered through injection, its selling market has been expanded by the release of oral human growth hormones. However, what is it, and how does it stand up to its injection-based counterpart?

Oral human growth hormones claim to have full potency at a reduced price. Being over the counter, it's more convenient than having to schedule frequent doctor visits for painful injections. Oral HGH comes in either a spray or pill form and can be easily administered. Nonetheless, there are some disputes over exactly how effective this form can be.

Some research claim that the effectiveness of the pill form compared to the spray is drastically reduced. This is because the pill passes through the digestive system and never makes it out. The most efficient way for delivering human growth hormones has always been directly into the bloodstream, something that the pill does not accomplish. The pill form can be destroyed during its passing through the digestion system before it even makes it to the bloodstream. The oral spray however, does not face these kinds of difficulties. HGH sprays are absorbed in the mouth, and like HGH injections, are sent directly into the blood. Despite this, there are also claims of the ineffectiveness of HGH sprays: the size of the molecule itself is much too large to be absorbed through the mouth.

Whether or not they produce positive results at all is a whole different story. Although oral human growth hormones are over the counter and make it convenient for the consumer, it also makes it just as easy for whoever is selling it. Being everywhere, there are many different companies that say they deliver human growth hormones, but may consist of such small traces of the hormone that it may do little to no good.

Scientists may no doubt be closer to delineating the process of aging than they have ever been, however the need for convenience for some consumers as caused some complications. The no hassle method of oral human growth hormones in itself is easier, but it's laced with some disputes over whether or not it does the same job as the injection based hormone does. Apparently the journey back to youth is a long and tiresome one with some possible road blocks in-between.
